Weather Styles Change As The Earth Rotates

By Ken Morris

The Earth is able to support life as we know it here because the sun and the atmosphere come together to form the climates in which people are able to survive. Without the sun, the Earth would be a frozen mass and without the atmosphere there would be no water to freeze.

The circulation of the Earth creates wind, and when wind is combined with sun and water, climates are created. Air pressure is created when the air molecules on Earth become dense. The denser the molecules are, the higher the air pressure is. Air at sea level exerts approximately 14.5 pounds of pressure per square inch.

Air molecules are always moving. Their speed of movement is dependent on the temperature surrounding them. Higher temperatures cause more frequent motion; cooler temperatures make air molecules move much slower. Convection occurs when an air mass warms up, expands, rises, and causes the air mass to become lighter. Convection happens all of the time, but it happens in irregular patterns. As the warm air rises, it cools, as it cools, it goes back down again. This constant movement also changes the air pressure of an area.

Low pressure occurs where the air is on its way up. High pressure occurs when the air molecules are all coming together, heating up and sinking down onto the ground. The movement creates wind and the more movement there is, the stronger the force of the wind. The changes in weather formations are often determined by these movements.

The Earth moves around in a complete circle in 24 hours. It moves around the sun in this circular pattern in 8760 hours, or 365 days, and creates what we call a year. The elliptical shape of the orbit of the Earth around the sun brings the Earth closer to the sun at particular times during the orbit. The position of the Earth toward or away from the sun determines the heat and light directed at the Earth, leading to the changes that occur during the day and night. This position on the orbit, depending on the position of the location on the Earth determines the season. The tilt of the Earth on its axis of about 23.5 degrees is what determines what happens where and what weather types exist where.

During the month of December, the North Pole tilts away from the sun and the South Pole tilts closer. This makes the Northern Hemisphere colder and darker during this time. As the Earth moves along, it changes its poles' positions and in 6 months, the sun is closest to this same part of the Earth. During this time, the Northern Hemisphere is much warmer and the days are much longer. This explains the different weather styles that occur at the same time, such as is how it is summer in the United States when it is winter in Australia.

Using Blues Backing Tracks To Improve Guitar Playing

By Zack Roberts

Did it ever dawn upon you that that practicing your blues guitar skills calls for playing with a real professional band? Particularly before you can move on to the next level of your technical expertise.

Seriously speaking, not every player has professional band lying around that they can visit up and say, "OK, I'm ready to practice now." Does anybody? Even professional jam sessions must be planned and coordinated and normally is only once a week. So, how on earth are you suppose to get prepped forthe real world?

Several better-known guitar player will tell you that the most advisable way to learn, is to practice, practice, practice! That's why you should try looking into purchasing blues backing tracks. Often times you will find that the blues jam tracks you'll run into are made of digital instruments that aren't authentic and it sounds like a miserable video game from the 1970s! Ensure that you do your preparation and select the right CD to practise along with. It should have real blues instruments along with a real professional band.

You also want it to have a extended variety of tempos and styles. You will want it to have a shuffle, a fast blues, a slow blues, etc. and it is important that the participants on the CD are in tune and stay in time (tempo). I know that seems pretty basic but you'd be amazed how many people will put up with shoddy midi blues jam tracks that they try to download...and it comes out terrible! Spare yourself the worry and get professional blues backing tracks from 50Blues

All I know is that ever since I set out playing along with blues jam tracks I have improved my guitar playing significantly. Having the power to control a professional blues band with the click of a mouse and a play button was unbelievable. It makes it much easier to improvise and create new licks and riff. I would recommend this method of learning to every blues guitarist or musician out there.

After the Rehearsal: Fuller returned to film making after a long hiatus with this lucid, autobiographical account of a particular infantry battalion and its courageous sergeant during WW2. Difficult to imagine that one film can pile so much into its narrative, an very rich, moving, practical, and poetic film. Carradine depicts and plays Fuller's doppelganger, complete with cigar. Cast includes Erland Josephson, Ingrid Thulin, Lena Olin, Nadja PaJrnstjema-Weiss, and Bertil Guve. (112 minutes, 1984)

Man of a Thousand Faces: A surprisingly devoted, well acted biography of megastar Lon Chaney. Cagney as Chaney, Malane as upset first spouse, and Greer as a spouse who brings him cheerfulness, all perform well. Cast includes James Cagney, Darothy Malane, Jane Greer, Marjorie Rambeau, Jim Backus, Jeanne Cagney, Rabert J. Evans, Jack Albertsan, and Rebuff Pallard. (122 minutes, 1957)

(117 minutes, 1984)

Cast includes Edward G. Robinson, John Garfield, Ida Lupino, Alexander Knox, Gene Lockhart, Barry Fitzgerald, and Stanley Ridges. (90 minutes, 1941)

Cuban Rebel Girls: This is Flynn's last film, and is an embarrassment. Playing himself, he assists Fidel Castro in his overthrow of Batista. The film is filmed on location throughout the Castro rebellion. Of interest only to see Flynn teamed with his very last lady friend, sixteen-year-old Aadland. Cast includes Errol Flynn, Beverly Aadland, John McKay, and Marie Edmund. (68 minutes, 1959)

The Gene Krupa Story: A commonplace rendition of awesome jazz drummer's life, his ups and downs, and his battle with pill dependency Cast includes Don Weis, Sal Mineo, Susan Kohner, James Darren, Susan Oliver, Yvonne Craig, Lawrence Dobkin, Crimson Nichols, and Buddy Lester. (101 minutes, 1959)

Days of Glory: A moving (and illuminating) story of North African cadets who joined their French brothers in battle in WW2 even though they were on no account acknowledged as equals. The film is constructed on a time worn recipe of following raw rookies as they become stiffened battle heroes by concentrating on a handful of men and personalizing their tale. This film brings this forgotten chapter of history comes to lucid life. Cast includes Jamel Debbouze, Samy Naceri, Roschdy Zem, Sami Bouajila, Bernard Blancan, Mathieu Simonet, Benoit Giros, Melanie Laurent, and Antoine Chappey. (120 minutes, 2006)

Parents Of Balloon Boy

By Carlo Mueres

This past week we saw the news media captivated by the idea that a 6-year-old boy, Falcon Heene had been carried off by a weather balloon. That is until the boy was later found in his own garage attic and shortly thereafter it was revealed on a television news show that the entire incident was likely a hoax. In replying to a reporter's question, the young Falcon turned to his dad on camera and said, "You guys said that, umm, we did this for the show." Oops.

The parents - Richard Heene and Mayumi Heene - have all along claimed it was not a hoax or a publicity stunt. Now, according to The New York Times, the parents will voluntarily surrender to police as soon as charges are filed, which is expected to happen on Wednesday.

While the truth continues to unfold, the police in the investigation have concluded it was likely indeed a publicity stunt: "We have evidence to indicate it was a publicity stunt done with the hope of marketing themselves to a reality-television show sometime in the future," said Larimer County sheriff Jim Alderden on Sunday afternoon at a news conference in Fort Collins, Colorado.

So that leaves us with the inevitable question - what could possibly psychologically motivate parents to use their child's very life in order to further themselves?

We see clues to the answer in some other information that's trickling out about the parents. ABC News noted that former business partner Barbara Slusser - who chased hurricanes and other storms with the Heenes - that they parted ways when Slusser felt that the Heenes often put their kids in harm's way. Slusser told ABC News, "The last straw for us was when Hurricane Gustav and Hurricane Ike were heading toward the Texas coastline and Heene wanted to go back there and take the kids."

So we seem to have a set of parents who already don't quite understand the idea of how to raise children in a safe, responsible and thoughtful manner, thinking nothing of storm-chasing hurricanes and tornadoes with their young children in tow. Storm-chasing, of course, can be a very dangerous and unpredictable endeavor. One of the reasons adults do it is for the thrill of the unpredictability of the storm - putting oneself in harm's way to experience a ferocious component of nature. But your children? They aren't old enough to make such decisions for themselves - they trust their parents' good judgment and experience.

But an account on Gawker by someone who worked with Richard Heene sheds even more light on the Heenes' motivation - money and additional fame. This was a family that had been on the television program, Wife Swap, and they had already tasted celebrity. They wanted more of it.

UFC 88 Flashback: Rashad KO's Liddell

By Ross Everett

Rashad Evans didnt scream about demanding respect in his prefight interviews because hes smart enough to know that respect must be earned. He earned it and then some with a devastating 2nd round TKO of Chuck Liddell in the main event of UFC 88.

If Evans needed any more validation of how little respect he was getting, he could have taken a look at the UFCs text message prediction poll of the main event which favored The Iceman by a whopping 81% to 19% margin. Or he could have listened to the UFC announcers, who had all but penciled Liddell in for a return to light heavyweight title contention after his inevitable victory. Instead of complain, Evans let his fists do the talking and with a perfectly placed overhand right will likely never have to worry about a lack of respect again.

From the opening horn, Evans showed no fear of Liddells once legendary power. Instead, he danced and moved (which was dumbly criticized as showboating by the UFC announce team), using his slick footwork and speed to dart in and out of range of Liddells punches. In the process, he was able to use his superior handspeed to get off first. His punches werent exactly highlight reel power shots at this point, but were nonetheless effective as evidenced by a cut opened under Liddells eye.

Evans highlight reel power shot was to come in the 2nd round. Liddell backed Evans up near the cage wall and went to throw an uppercut. Simultaneously, Evans responded with an overhand right that landed quicker, harder and more accurately. The perfectly placed punch knocked Liddell out cold and referee Herb Dean jumped in to cover him up and wave off the fight without taking a second look. Evans' KO was one of the most devastating in the history of the sport, and made all the more so by the status of the man on the receiving end.

Rashad Evans raised his record to 17-0-1, with the lone blemish a draw against Tito Ortiz at UFC 73. Liddell, meanwhile, saw his record drop to 21-6"with three of those six losses coming in his last 4 fights.

Liddells loss notwithstanding, it was a good night for UFC veterans as Rich Franklin and Dan Henderson won their fights in impressive fashion. Franklin looked particularly sharp in dismantling tough Matt Hamill, eventually prevailing by 3rd round TKO. Hamill had trouble getting inside for the takedown he needed to compete in the bout, and every time he closed the distance he was met with a barrage of Franklin punches and kicks. Franklin employed leg kicks early on, which obviously hurt Hamills ability to shoot for takedowns and ended the bout with a perfectly placed body kick that had Hamill doubled up and tapping out even as Mario Yamasaki covered the prone fighter.

This was the UFCs first trip to Atlanta and despite a good attendance the crowd itself was somewhat disappointing. In a marked contrast to the knowledgeable and enthusiastic fans at the Target Center in Minneapolis for UFC 87"arguably the best MMA crowd ever at a US venue"the live crowd at Phillips Arena often acted as if they were at a taping of Georgia Championship Wrestling. Every foreign fighter was booed mercilessly"including South Korean Kim. Perhaps the audience didnt realize that South Korea has been a US ally since its establishment after WW II.

More problematic was the crowds utter lack of respect for the fighters postfight. Poor Dong Hyun Kim was booed during his postfight interview like he was Professor Toru Takana cutting a heel promo on Mr. Wrestling 2 after winning the Georgia Heavyweight Title by throwing salt in his opponents eyes while the referee was distracted. Not quite the respect that a 4th degree judo black belt whod just won a very tough fight deserves. Kims treatment by the fans cant be written off as a reaction to a close split decision victory; Rashad Evans was booed after his victory over Liddell, and short of decapitating The Iceman there was no way his win could have been more decisive.
