A Delightful Opening NFL Game

By Bart Grome

Someone give LenDale a towel. I suppose he would seek to cover his face under one on his trip away from Pittsburgh.

During an evening where Troy Polamalu went down to a knee wound, Wille Parker and the remaining Steelers running back unit couldn't manage to get the ball rolling, and Hines Ward did something he rarely does - fumbled in a huge play scenario. Ben Roethlisberger stood steady in the backfield, took a small number of sacks, although in the end architected yet one more game winning drive to help the Steelers beat the Titans 13-10 in the NFL season opener.

It did not begin well for Big Ben and crew; Tennessee brought their "A" game and just about shut the Steelers rush game down.

Big Ben was calm under pressure, though. Yeah, he threw two picks (Brett Favre does it all the time, and there are fans willing to bow down to him when he enters a room, so get off it).

But he also passed for 363 yards, which included 60 yards during his last drive of the game.

The defense stepped up and executed when the chips were down, notably on special teams, where a blocked Rob Bironas field goal resulted in their only touchdown of the game.

Of course, that play cost them Troy Polamalu, although it only slowed them down for a minute or two.

If Hines Ward had either fallen down or shifted somewhat faster at the end of his run in the 4th quarter, the game would have concluded earlier.

However this was too great a contest to not end up in overtime. Both franchises had fought their hearts out, both organizations had athletes go down to injury, and an extra period seemed the only fair way to resolve the game.

If, , you can deem pro football overtimes fair.

After the Steelers won the toss, Roethlisberger and company made short work of a tired Tennessee defense, heading downfield for 63 yards to set up the game-winning field goal.
