Tips You Need To Take To Heart When Finding Native American Arrowheads

By Jody Seiler

If you're a serious collector of historical items then finding Native American arrowheads has to be the Holy Grail for you. These artifacts carry valuable historical significance and you can be sure they'll have value to someone else. But some people who are not well trained at such things may do stuff which jeopardizes the value of the piece. You need to be made aware of all of this otherwise you may end up devaluing your arrowhead. They'll all come in some sort of fragile form when you find them which is why you need to be even more careful. Here are the conditions you'll come across when finding Native American arrowheads.

* Often the piece could be damaged, so you will need to be trained well as to what you're looking for

* They may be very wet and in need of immediate preservation if you hope to keep them in good condition

* Other pieces will be rusted to the point at which you'll feel they're not worthwhile, but actually rust is a good. But by cleaning them you could devalue them, so it is best to put them in a safe place and then have them looked at by a professional.

Why is this all important and why should I care?

If you do this as a hobby then you might not care so much about the condition of the arrowhead, whereas a serious collector takes into consideration the condition of the item and takes that very seriously. Once you have found a Native American arrowhead that is a sign that there are more around the area. By not being trained or knowledgeable as to what to look for, you could easily miss broken pieces. And where there are broken pieces, there are ones that aren't broken and these are very valuable. Below you will find things to consider if you are just starting out or are not sure what to look for.

* If you know someone that is a serious collector ask them to come along with you. That way if you come across an area that is "hot" they will be able to let you know.

* You could even contact an archaeologist and see if you can go along with them to learn what to look for. Now what is found you will not be able to keep, but it will be a great learning experience, so that you can go out on your own and know what you are doing.

* Bring along the proper materials to collect the items. If you don't do this you could end up destroying what could be a monumental find

If you find a Native American arrowhead in good condition be proud of yourself. Finding arrowheads in a good condition is really rare and they will certainly have historical value. The items will not have sharp points because the people who created them were only concerned with the effectiveness of the items and not aesthetics

I'll leave you with this, when finding Native American arrowheads it may be a good idea to give them a historical society who'll be able to make better use of them. After all they are a piece of history.
