Give Crede the Gold Glove

With the lowest total of errors at the 3B position and the highest fielding percentage in the AL at the position, Joe Crede has obviously been effective at third base for the Twins in 2009. There's a new metric that's taken more seriously, though, and this is called the UZR.

Crede is a very valuable Minnesota Twin offensively. Relative to where he hits in the order, his numbers are solid to the point where any team would be happy to have such numbers later in the lineup. His fielding has been better though.

The UZR/150 is the average number of runs saved over the course of 150 defensive games. As can be seen, Crede sits between 25-30 runs saved per 150 defensive games. The next highest run saver,Adrian Beltre, is between 15-20 runs saved per 150 games. Thus, Crede saves about 10 runs more per 150 games than Beltre, one of the premier defensive 3B in baseball.

This raises the question: Are we, as bloggers, taking Crede's defense for granted? Do we realize just how valuable Joe Crede is to this team?

Crede gets very little respect for what he does. He's a solid hitter and people recognize this, but virtually no one ever discusses his efficient play as a third baseman. He's simply been phenomenal this year.

Crede should be the hands down favorite for the Gold Glove, and I'm going to predict that he won't win it. It's the nature of the beast when it comes to these things.

Unfortunately, the Twins get little respect when it comes down to voting. Look at snubs like Luis Castillo, Justin Morneau, and Joe Mauer, all of whom deserved Gold Gloves and never got them.

The voters for the award are far from objective, and this unfortunately shows. With a small market team like Minnesota, it's hard to get the "pull" that the bigger cities have.

Learn How to Blow Smoke Rings

If you are a smoker, then you have probably thought about trying to blow smoke rings at some point. You may have even tried to blow the rings and then found out that it was a little more difficult than you thought it would be. Try as you might, the only thing that you could get to happen was a stream of smoke, along with some frustration. Blowing smoke rings isn't easy when you first try it, but with a little bit of practice, you should be able to do it.

When you are practicing your smoke rings, make sure that you have a good, tightly packed cigar. While some people use cigarettes, the tobacco in the cigarettes does not usually have as tight of a pack as the cigars do. When the tobacco is tightly packed, you will find that it is easier to get thicker, richer smoke, and this is a key element in blowing smoke rings.

The first thing that you will want to do is to light the cigar, preferably using cigar lighters as this will ensure that you evenly light the entire tip of the cigar. You will then take a large drag from the cigar and take in as much smoke as is comfortable. You will hold this in the top front part of your throat. It may take you a little while for you to get used to this, as it is different from the normal manner in which you smoke.

With the smoke in your throat, you will then press your tongue down while making the form of an "O" with your lips. You will want to make sure that you make a wide shape with your mouth, but you must keep the smoke at the top of your throat for the time being. When you have the shape formed, you can send little puffs of smoke out of that "O" shape. It helps if you say "uh" silently as you do this. When the smoke leaves your lips, they will form smoke rings.

As you can see, blowing smoke rings is not as simple as just blowing smoke through your mouth. It takes some practice and some time to get the technique down just right. When you have figured it out, you will find it can be a very impressive trick to show your friends when you are down at the local cigar bar or playing poker at the house.

Obtain a map of where you will be hiking. Usually, you can pick one up at the park visitor center or ranger station. You can also download maps from various websites. Having a good map will not only will not only prevent you from getting lost, but it can help rescuers find you if you suffer an injury.

A map reading compass will help you find your bearings and keep you from getting lost. Using the map and compass together will keep you correctly oriented to know which direction you're heading.

Always carry two, one liter water bottles. Two liters is the minimum daily intake but chances are you will require more. Hiking is a physical activity and through perspiration, exposure and climate you can become dehydrated quickly. Bring some type of water purifier with you. For personal use, I take liquid treatment with me. Although you can survive a month without food, you will only last a few days without water.

Take a bit more food than you think you will need, to get you through an extra day if need be. This can easily be accomplished by having a few whole food bars with you, each of which constitute a complete meal replacement. Important for maintaining energy output.

Bring a couple more layers of clothing. These will serve to keep you warm and dry should the temperature drop unexpectedly, you somehow become wet or both. Choose layers that are synthetic. Golf fans were all stunned today when Tiger Woods was defeated by an unknown Y.E. Yang at the PGA championship. The lead was all Tiger's, and to have seen him blow it, well, many weren't expecting it to put it lightly. Yang is the first ever Asian golfer to ever win a major event, and this is the first time Tiger Woods ever lost a major on the last day after having held the lead.

Yay? I don't think the PGA, it's sponsors, or the casual golf fan are very happy. Tiger Woods in the starter, middle reliever, and closer for the PGA. Without Tiger, as we saw last year, no one cares. Now, people are getting the feeling that Tiger has lost it. He didn't win a major this year and pretty much choked away the PGA Championship after missing the cut at the British Open.

Tiger hasn't lost it, he's won 5 tournaments this year, coming from 5 strokes back on Sunday to win one, and coming back from 8 shots down Thursday to win by 3 strokes on Sunday. But, as I said, casual golf fans don't get that. In fact, most sports fans probably don't get that because he hasn't performed in the biggest events, the Majors, the moneymakers, the events that pull in the biggest ratings.

While everyone loves to talk about Yang and what he did today, this was a crippling blow to the PGA in 2009. There were simply no exciting stories that capped off the year of majors. Tom Watson nearly became the oldest golfer (by far) to ever win a major, before losing it on the final day. Woods went the entire year without a major, virtually unheard of during his career.

Yet, this pushes it to another level. You're talking about the greatest golfer on Earth, losing to some no-name from South Korea who probably won't win another major. If Tiger had won, it would've given hope to next year, a hope maybe he finally does what he was destined to do, win all the major in the same year and pass Jack Nicklaus for the most Major wins ever.

While there are a few more months of golf left, there are no majors, and only serious golf enthusiasts will track these events. Fringe fans will go back to watching other sports, and will be far from enthused about the 2010 golf season.

Golf needs Tiger Woods just as much as he needs more majors. Tiger has given a face to golf, a sport that's sorely lacked one for so many years. Tiger is golf's Michael Jordan, and needs to return to this status in 2010.
